Your Best Worst Day - Copeland Coaching

Your Best Worst Day With the wrap up of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, Ive been thinking a lot about what it takes to be a top competitor.   Athletes spend decades training to be the best at one single sport.   They have just a few minutes once every four years to show off their skills and compete to be the best in the world. But with so many talented athletes, what does it take to really stand out?   Id argue its grit: being a courageous person who refuses to give up under any circumstances.   Natural ability is great, but it wont always get you to the finish line. Having a good day is easy.   You feel great and everything falls into place.   The real question is, how do you handle things when the world around you seems to be crumbling? US figure skater Gracie Gold fell during one of her most important Olympic performances.   But, she didnt let her mistake keep her from completing the rest of her routine beautifully.   Despite falling, Gracie received a high score.   She came in fourth overall, and although she didnt receive a medal, she provided shes a true Olympian. Have you ever been on a job interview and had something go terribly wrong?   How did you handle it?   Did you cancel the interview, stumble through answers, or apologize for yourself? My worst ever interview disaster came about seven years ago.   I had flown to the east coast for an important in person interview at a large, traditional corporation.   The flight was in the evening, so I arrived late the night before and took a cab from the airport to my hotel.   Upon unpacking my suitcase, I realized I had forgotten the pants to my suit.   Yes, of all the things that could go wrong, I forgot my pants!   Id worn sweat pants on the plane, so I had no appropriate clothing for the interview.   What could I do?   This was a real pickle Id gotten myself into! First, I looked for nearby stores.   There were none open this late, and I had no transportation to get anywhere.   Not even taxis were running. Rather than give up, I started to brainstorm.   I wondered if I could get my pants from Memphis to me in time for the 8 AM interview the next day.   Although it was too late to drop off a package at FedEx Office, I found that packages could be dropped off at the airport until midnight.   First, I found a friend who agreed to drive my pants to FedEx.   Then, two other people helped me get a key to my apartment to that friend.   When my friend entered my apartment, I walked them through my closet over the phone, to ensure they found the right pair of pants.   The friend made it to the airport on time, and the pants arrived at 6 AM, two hours before my interview! I alerted the hotel staff of the situation, to ensure they notified me the moment the pants arrived. During the interview, I was asked to describe a difficult situation I had encountered and the steps Id taken to overcome it.   I used the example of my pants, and the interviewers were blown away.   They were impressed at the story, and couldnt have imagined the trouble Id taken to ensure I was properly suited for our meeting.   I was able to turn what was otherwise a train wreck of a situation into a great story that won me major points during the interview. As youre looking for your next job, you will no doubt face adversity.   You will come across situations that seem impossible to fix or overcome.   I encourage you to stay focused on your ultimate goal of finding a fulfilling career.   Stay the course.   Be gritty.   Reach out to your support network for strength.   Even on your worst days, do your best to let your talents shine through and in the end, your perseverance will pay off in dividends. I hope these tips have helped you.   Visit CopelandCoaching.com to find more tips to improve your job search. Happy hunting! Angela Copeland @CopelandCoach

14 Tips for Successful Holiday Job Searching Holiday Networking - Chameleon Resumes

14 Tips for Successful Holiday Job Searching Holiday Networking - Chameleon Resumes Written by  Lisa Rangel, Executive Resume Writer Your head tells you, “No one is hiring.” I am here to tell you that it is not true â€"I have had two clients land and start positions in December. This is actually the time we get to have fun with this process! The holidays can present many leads to pursue and an abundance of opportunities to expand your network. Whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, here are practices you can do to make job searching and holiday networking easier for you during this season: (1) Networking is not only about attending eventsâ€"use the phone. Each day, call one friend and one former co-worker to whom you have not spoken with in a while and see how they are doing. Then let the conversation gravitate to what you are up to…naturally. (2) Gravitate towards the positive people. Stay clear of the ‘bah-humbug’ crowd. It is imperative to stay positive during the holidays. I am all for helping people with a pick-me-up. But if you feel someone is just a Debbie Downer who is going to bring you down with him/her, then find someone else to chat with, learn about and help. This is networking not therapy. Help someone who wants your help. (3) When attending events, enter the event thinking, “Who can I help?” versus having the “Ugh, I don’t know anyone!” or “What are they going to think of me?” mindset. You will appear more genuine and less stressed if you want to offer assistance than if you are feeling you have to fit in with the crowd. (4) Do your homework before choosing to attend events. Does it make sense for you to attend the event? If two events present itself, pick one and do it well. Don’t spread yourself too thin. Research who will be attending to evaluate how it can fulfill your personal or professional goals. Make sure attending serves a purpose for youâ€"even if it is just to have fun. (5) Not sure what to say or ask? Read “The Fine Art of Small Talk” by Debra Fine. Choose 4-5 questions out of this book to help you get a conversation started. Or use it to create some of your own stand-bys. This will help reduce the awkward silences that can arise. Some of my favs that get things rolling: a. How are you connected to this group? What brings you to the event? b. What kind of day did you have today? c. What do you enjoy most about what you do? What do you find most challenging? d. Plans for the weekend? (then ask them how long they â€"or their childrenâ€"have been engaged in that activity) (6) Find a buddy to attend the event with you. But do not spend the event chatting with each other. You can do that anytime. Plan to facilitate introductions for each other as you meet people throughout the event. (7) Get there early whenever possibleâ€"easier to start conversations with the early crowd. It can be a challenge to enter conversations already started if you are late. (8) Have an eloquent, concise way to describe where you are in life and what you are looking to do in the next phase of your career. Be prepared to explain to people that you are looking for a new position and the kind of job you seek, when it is appropriate to share. (9) Be curious. Ask questions and learn about problems/opportunities within your contacts industry to make mental notes of items to research and explore after the event. This could lead to your next job. (10) Don’t ask about job openings at their company. Instead, ask questions to gain information about the person you are talking to and learn about their company, interests and passions. (11) Networking events are about the peopleâ€"not the food. Can’t believe I said that! Seriously, though, do not spend time with the canapés, no matter how fabulous they may be. You are there to expand your network and increase your opportunitiesâ€"focus people! (12) Give 100% of your attention to the person to whom you are speakingâ€"don’t let your eyes wander. People can sense if you are looking for someone more interesting to talk toâ€"so even if that is happening to you, you must be polite to your immediate audience. Excuse yourself gracefully, if need be. Always treat everyone with respect and attention. (13) Follow up after the event. If you enjoyed meeting someone, email them saying so. Call them asking to meet for coffee over the next few weeks. This is how relationships start. (14) Do not stress yourself outâ€"Keep your purpose for these events in perspective. You are there to meet people and make connections. You will not find a job at the event, so relax. You would not ask someone to marry you on the first date nor would you want to be asked. Well, networking opportunities are not even the first date! So set realistic, attainable goals in performing networking activities and you will feel less pressure throughout the season.   Written by  Lisa Rangel, Executive Resume Writer Sign up for Chameleon Resumes Blog Name: Email: If you are interested in working with Lisa Rangel,  an accomplished executive resume writer, social media profile writer and job search consultant, to achieve the social media exposure and land the interviews you want,  sign up for an exploratory call now  and learn about the Chameleon Resumes services that can help you land your next role.

Considering Working for A Startup Ask These 6 Questions First

Considering Working for A Startup Ask These 6 Questions First Source â€" Pexels.comJoining a startup can be an astoundingly remunerating profession experience, yet it is likewise an unsafe activity move in light of the fact that a great deal of new companies end up falling flat. The SBA It keeps on astonishing me how frequently individuals don't pose these basic inquiries before joining another startup company.Usually, work applicants make sure to get some information about the activity essentials evalI trust it's basically critical to comprehend the foundation and history of the organizers. How could they meet? Have they cooperated previously? What united them with this specific opportunity?Too numerous new businesses come up short not because of market powers, yet since the organizers just couldn't concur on significant issues. You have to pose inquiries to see how well the authors get along.2. Would you be able to coexist with the team?Startup groups are frequently an extremely affectionate gathering. There is no place to cover up. In the ev ent that you don't coexist with pretty much everyone there, life will be hard. Most enlisted people will choose whether they regard the makers alongside other colleagues If you can not see working close to them for 60+ hours seven days, at that point mull over working at this firm.3. What is the historical backdrop of this fundamental idea? What were the different business thoughts tried and afterward dismissed? I get stressed if the idea being pursued is excessively green and new. Frequently the business visionaries haven't yet gotten an opportunity to thoroughly consider the plan of action totally in beginning period startups.Frequently, it takes a sensible measure of refinement for some individuals to settle-in on a thought that they will seek after seriously.I am cautious of startup groups that build up a thought in week 1 and start enlistment in week two since they are so fascinated of the idea and can not stand by to begin. This is quite often awful news.If I were joining a star tup, I'd love to see how the establishing group happened upon the thought they are seeking after today If a startup is funding supported, it ought not be too difficult to even think about learning about the speculators and the measure of cash raised. Normally, this data is freely open, regularly in an online public statement, and if not, it's not improper to ask. After every one of these business visionaries are requesting that you face a challenge joining their youngster firm. For bootstrap and self-subsidized new businesses, this line of addressing can be fairly uncomfortable. If you are queasy about it, at that point it is conceivable to return to the: Which are the capital-raising systems for the business? Would you be able to hope to acquire outside speculators? Assuming this is the case, when? These requests will give you an inclination for where the organization stands. One interesting point: There isn't any genuine substitute for cash in the bank. In spite of the fact that the w ay that we have numerous speculators who have communicated intrigue is magnificent, yet it won't cover the tabs, nor your paycheck.evalPhoto Credit â€" Pexels.com5. Which are the authors wanting to get from the effort?evalTry and move past the sayings and adages. Truly, what do they have to get from the startup? Assemble a world-renowned thing? Make a gigantic measure of cash? Have a business open up to the world? Raise assets from top-level VCs? Get a chance to work with their friends? At a specific level, they must have comparative goals with as one another, or there'll most likely be a considerable lot of conflict.6. What will the startup accomplish for you?Joining a startup is a sensibly huge hazard which requires a great deal of difficult work. For it to be important, you should be certain that alongside carrying a ton to the startup you will join â€" it gives a great deal to you.Do you need to wear a few caps? Would you like to have a sensible measure of control and attentivene ss? Is it accurate to say that you are hoping to work with a specific originator? Whatever you credit an incentive to, be certain that you have a decent possibility of really getting this worth.One-path associations in startup-land once in a while really work. You should both can increase a great deal from the startup â€" alongside contributing a ton to it.I'm a tremendous aficionado of the development openings in a startup â€" particularly for more youthful individuals prior in their professions. I credit my effective profession and pioneering soul to my initial occupations in startup firms.Nowhere else will you get the differed set of encounters and perceivability which you could get inside a beginning time startup (regardless of whether you go into business or work in someone else's).If you won't advantage from this (or aren't eager about it), you are passing up probably the most elevated part of value.Overall, apparently the level of startup action (particularly in the key marke ts) is starting to pick up.People are beginning organizations at a genuinely sensible rate and those harmed legitimately or in a roundabout way from the past innovation bubble have begun to rise up out of under their work areas and research new startup opportunities.I, for one, think it is consistently an amazing time to look at startup vocation openings. Nonetheless, it's fundamental to stroll in with your eyes fully open, particularly in the event that you have never worked for a startup firm before.Good karma.
